Her parents owned homes in both Philadelphia and Connecticut, her father ran a bank, and her mother, an immigrant from Germany, worked as his translator. Despite the Depression, they managed stability, and she carried that sense of discipline into her own family.

After marrying my father in Philadelphia, she moved with him to Charleston, South Carolina. That was where we were raised. And when he left, she became the sole provider. Economic hardship defined our daily lives. I believed I was the only student in school on the free lunch program. At sixty-four years old, I still remember the shame of hiding behind that tray.

Her Strength in Suffering

The greatest lesson she ever gave us was not spoken but lived. When she told us she had cancer, she made a vow that seemed impossible. She said she would live to see us all graduate. For over a decade, through pain and surgeries that scarred her body, she carried that vow like a torch. She fulfilled it and then released her life.

For me, it became the foundation of everything I have accomplished since. I learned that once you commit to a vision, you hold it until it is done. You may not be the fastest to start, but once you latch on, you finish. That lesson is in me because it was in her.

The Extension of Her Influence

A Different Kind of Legacy

When I think of my father, the memories are different. Where my mother gave us presence, my father often gave us absence. He was an insurance underwriter, always a clerk, never at the top. His name was Robert, though most called him Bob. He had a past that shaped him in ways I did not fully understand until later. He was adopted. The man his mother married did not want him, and that rejection followed him throughout his life. My father had a temper. He drank heavily and often disappeared. There were days when he was gone for long stretches, then returned as if nothing had happened. I spent much of my childhood afraid of him. Fear can etch itself into a child's bones, shaping the way you see authority and safety.

He never modeled finishing anything. He drifted from one thing to the next. Where my mother's stick-to-itiveness kept her alive through cancer, his lack of follow-through became his defining pattern. You may have someone in your life who lived this way — someone you swore you would never become.

I learned to do the opposite. Sometimes the best teachers are those who fail you. They show you the path you must refuse. They make you decide who you will not be.

Forgotten Birthdays

By the mid-1960s, my father was gone for good. My brother Bill, four years older than me, tried to step into the role of leader in the family. At seventeen or eighteen, he was not equipped to run a household of six, but he did what he could.

Our family never truly gathered together again. I cannot recall a single moment when my father, my mother, and all five children went anywhere as a family. No vacations, no shared rituals, not even church. That absence shapes you. You may feel the same, carrying memories not of togetherness but of separation.

What I carry forward is the determination to do differently. When my daughters were young, we always took family vacations, even if it was just to visit relatives. I wanted them to know what I never had.

Learning Backwards

From my father, I learned that absence leaves a mark. But it does not have to define you. You may carry wounds from someone else's failure. Yet those wounds can become wisdom. I decided early that I would live the opposite way. Where he abandoned, I would stay. Where he quit, I would finish. Where he looked away, I would look directly at the people who depended on me.

I chose to remember birthdays because mine was forgotten. Three times as a child, my family forgot my birthday. Now, every morning, I send birthday cards and messages to others. It is a ritual of presence. You can create rituals like this in your own life. They become proof to others that they matter.

Beginnings in Work

Work started early for me. At eight years old, I was already cutting grass for neighbors, earning five dollars a yard. By the time summer stretched into fall, I had ten yards lined up, week after week, from April through October. That rhythm taught me consistency before I even understood the word. You may remember your own first job, the way it shaped your view of money and responsibility.

By fourteen, I moved from lawns to a gas station. Gas was thirty-eight cents a gallon. The owner offered me a dollar for every oil change I could sell. They cost just under six dollars, and after two weeks, I had sold so many that he shut the program down. You may know the feeling of exceeding expectations so quickly that others have to reset the rules around you. That was my first sales training.

Building Skills

During my senior year of high school, I took a job in a jewelry store. That work carried me all the way through college. I arranged my classes so they ended by noon, then worked at the store from one to nine every day. Study came in the mornings. It was a full cycle of discipline.

After graduation, I followed my older brother Bill into the steamship industry. My first job was in New York, stationed between Staten Island and the World Trade Center. I moved south as soon as I could. Savannah became my next station. I worked for the largest steamship line in the world, handling cargo, coordinating logistics, and making sure goods moved smoothly from ship to customer.

The Logistics of People

Ships never make money sitting still. They only profit when moving. That truth etched itself into me. I applied the same principle to real estate years later. When showing homes, I always planned routes in circles — taking clients to the farthest property first, then working our way back home. Just as ships start and end at the same port, buyers should finish where they feel anchored.

When oil prices collapsed in the late 1980s and early 2000, the company faltered. I lost my job. At first, it felt like failure. But you may have faced the same truth: what looks like loss often becomes the doorway to reinvention.

The Unexpected Shift

One afternoon, I walked into a grocery store in Houston to grab a salad. I ran into a former client from the oil business. He had lost his job, too, but he had pivoted. He was now running a real estate company, buying and selling homes, building wealth in a different way. He asked me what I was doing. I told him I was between jobs. He said, "Get your real estate license. I'll give you a place to start."

You know those moments when a single conversation changes the direction of your life. That was mine. Within three weeks, I had my license. My first assignment was to work with a client whom no one else in the office had been able to help. I asked her questions for half an hour: What do you want? What do you not want? What have you already seen? What is missing? Then I took her to a home that fit her answers. Two hours later, she was under contract.

That first sale confirmed what I had already learned as a boy at the gas station: asking the right questions is more powerful than trying to sell. When you stop pushing and start listening, trust builds.

Everyone Deserves a Home

The first philosophy I absorbed into my bones is this: everyone deserves a home. Not just a house. Not just a roof and four walls. A home. A place where identity lives. A place you can call your own. That is why I stayed. Week after week, I showed up. We housed two hundred and fifty men each night. We kept eight women safe in a hostel. I remember counting the line for meals, always bringing women and children in first. You know the urgency of those small choices. They tell people they matter.

Beyond Shelter

The philosophy that everyone deserves a home reaches beyond the homeless. It extends to every client I serve — a young couple buying their first house, an elderly widow selling the place she has lived for decades, a family navigating credit challenges. Every single person deserves a place that fits them.

When I work with first-time buyers, I remind them that they are not just buying for today. They are buying for three years from now. A home is not just about the moment. I also remind clients not to focus on interest rates. Rates rise and fall. What matters is the home itself. Numbers are temporary. The place you build your life in will shape you for years. If you wait for conditions to be perfect, you will wait forever. The right time is always now.

Presence as Service

Another part of my philosophy is presence. You have probably experienced agents, leaders, or even family members who vanish when you need them most. I believe the opposite is required. Presence is service. If I commit to a client, I will stay until they reach their outcome.

When I meet with a family, I remind them that selling a home is not the same as selling a house. A home is memory and identity. A house is a structure and walls. The key is making the mental shift. You will always carry the home with you in your heart. The house is what you let go of. You may need to practice this in your own life. Some things must be held as memory. Others must be released as material.

This is why I do not hide behind emails or texts when something difficult arises. If there is bad news, I deliver it face-to-face or over the phone. You may recognize this discipline in your own work. Hard conversations require presence, not distance.

Digging for the Deeper Why

Most real estate agents ask surface questions. Square footage. Price range. School district. Those matter, but they are not enough. I practice what I call the five, six, and seven questions. I keep asking why. What is important about this? And what is important about that? And then what? By the time we reach the seventh answer, the real truth emerges.

You can practice this too. In your business, your family, and even in your self-reflection, do not stop at the first answer. Ask again. And again. Eventually, you will reach the core. That is where decisions gain power. That is where values live.

The Power of Presence

Every client I serve works directly with me. That is the first thing you need to know. While others may advertise massive teams, the truth is that you often end up working with someone far less experienced than the face on the billboard. When you hire me, you get me. My clients hear my voice, sit across from me, and receive my presence. The people around me — lenders, inspectors, title officers — are partners, but they are not substitutes.

I also set a limit. I never take more than seven clients at a time. This ensures that each person receives my full attention. When you try to serve everyone, you serve no one well. By choosing your limits, you protect your quality. Presence is a superpower because it is rare. In a world of distraction, to give undivided attention is transformative.

Honesty in Communication

Another superpower is the way I handle communication. If there is good news, I celebrate it openly. If there is bad news, I never hide behind a screen. I call, or I show up. I do not send an email or a text to deliver difficult truths. You may have experienced the opposite — perhaps someone avoided you when you needed clarity most. You remember the sting of being left alone with uncertainty.

Honest communication builds security. When you know that someone will face you directly, even when it is uncomfortable, you can relax. Clients often tell me that what they value most is that they know what is coming next. I do everything I can to prepare them for the road ahead. Anticipation is a gift you can give to others.

A Guide by Your Side

I often tell clients that I am their guide by their side. It is not a slogan. It is a way of being. From the first meeting to the closing table, and long after, I remain in the relationship. My care extends well beyond transactions. I remind clients to file their homestead exemption, schedule service on their air conditioning, or review their insurance rates. I have arranged pest control for a client deployed overseas because his wife and children needed help.

That is the essence of being a guide. You do not abandon when the paperwork ends. You stay when the lights are off and the questions still linger. Being a guide means anticipating needs, offering reassurance, and making sure no one walks alone. That is a superpower you can practice in every area of your life.

Seeing What Others Miss

Another strength I bring to clients is the ability to see what they cannot. Buyers often fall in love with a property and overlook its flaws. My role is to point out potential pitfalls before they become regrets. I encourage clients not to fall in love too quickly. Fall in like, but wait for inspection before making a full commitment. Twenty-five years of experience and thousands of homes have trained me to notice what is hidden.

In my career, I can count on one hand the number of deals that fell apart after inspection. That record comes from helping people make informed decisions rather than impulsive ones. This superpower is not about being negative. It is about protecting people from harm. It is about ensuring that the decision they make today will be a decision they honor tomorrow.

Staying Beyond the Sale

Most agents disappear after closing. I do not. My clients call me years later with questions, referrals, or emergencies. One man reached out from the Red Sea while deployed on a ship. His family had a pest problem at home. He trusted me to solve it, even though the sale had closed long before. I am not just an agent for a transaction. I am an ally for life.

This consistency is rare. Most people move on to the next opportunity. Staying available is a superpower because it defies expectation. Legacies are built not through grand gestures but through sustained presence.
